Dr. Darren Iwamoto is an assistant professor of psychology at Chaminade University where he teaches undergraduate psychology and graduate counseling psychology courses.  Darren came to Chaminade University in 2007 as the school counseling internship director.  Previously, Darren spent 11 years working with high-risk adolescents and their families in various community mental health settings.  Darren is a licensed mental health counselor and a national certified counselor.  In the summer of 2013 Darren received his doctorate and was promoted to his current position, assistant professor of psychology at Chaminade University of Honolulu.

 

Darren has developed a number of community-based mental health programs that includes opening a therapeutic group home, developing an outreach unit for an adolescent diversion program, and partnering with Family Court in developing an intervention program that focused on the runaways.  Darren has also conducted research on an alternate pedagogy to increase academic achievement and self-regulation skills, bullying prevention, and suicide prevention.

  • Responsible for the management of multiple information and communication systems and projects, which includes but not limited to the development of an Enterprise Level Electronic Medical Records Information System, an Enterprise Asset Tracking system and Corporate Intranet Portal.

  • Work closely with the Hale Kipa, Inc. Security and Privacy Officers to ensure HIPAA compliance.

  • Worked closely with the Quality Insurance department and participated in program and agency-wide assessment.

Program Coordinator, Hale Kipa, Inc., Honolulu, HI. July 1998 – July 2005

 

  • From July 1998 to July 2005 I coordinated multiple human services programs at various times.  The programs are as follows: a) Emergency Shelter Residential Group Home; b) Therapeutic Residential Group Home; c) Adolescent Diversion Program; d) Juvenile Justice Diversion Program; and e) the Valid Court Order Program.  In summary my duties were as followed:

    • Strength-based individual and family therapy that included but not limited to, providing counseling and guidance in situations where the individual and/or family was having difficulty grasping or understanding the nature of their challenge(s), choosing amongst various options and assisting the individual and/or family to adjust to environmental conditions and/or acquiring or sustaining appropriate control or motivation.  I have experience working with, but not limited to, juveniles and young adults that are mentally ill, emotionally disturbed, substance abusers, family reunification challenges and juveniles and young adults in transition.

    • Supervision (professional development) for up to 11 staff including practicum, intern and volunteers that included but not limited to, a) plan, organize and direct the work of staff; b) assign and review their work; c) advise/coach them on difficult problem areas; d) time and schedule their work; e) train and develop new and existing employees; f) case consultation and g) adjust staff actions when necessary.  

    • Intensive case management that includes but not limited to, a) identify and make referrals to service providers within a specific geographic area or field who provide assistance in meeting the identified need(s);  b) working with juveniles and young adults who are resistive to accepting services, or have other challenges that made treatment services fragmented and it was my responsibility to develop and coordinate multiple service providers; and c) plan educational and recreation activities for residential clients.

    • Property management that included but not limited to, a) coordinate facility repairs; b) purchasing and c) coordinate vehicle maintenance.

  • Responsible for completing all monthly, quarterly and annual reports as required by Hale Kipa, Inc. and various funding sources.

  • Participated in grant writing, program development, and implementation and evaluation committees.  In particular, I participated in the development and implementation of a Therapeutic Residential Group Home, the Juvenile Justice Center and the Valid Court Order Program.  I also designed and implemented an outreach team for the Ho’okala Program (aka Adolescent Diversion Program).

  • Participated in the Quality Improvement process by participating in internal auditing committees that reviewed client files and program workflows (program model/design).

  • Participated in committees designed to develop agency-wide policies and procedures

  • Liaison between the Honolulu Police Department and Family Court in addition to other State, City and non-profit agencies.

  • Member of the Department of Health Child Adolescent Mental Health Division Utilization Management committee, District 1 Weed and Seed and Hawaii Juvenile Justice Project.
